So if you wanna get down to it I personally have been lifting for about 6 months seriously and even though im only starting Ive learned a few things through trial and error that I really wish id known when I started.
1. Have a clear cut goal
Seriously, if you dont know exactly where you want to go you haven't got a fucking hope of making any progress.
Take me for example, for months i flip flopped from losing weight to trying to gain muscle and in the end I got neither and wasted a full 6 months.
My goals now are as follows:
1) Build my body up too a leanish 200 pounds
2) Cut up until im under 10% bf
2. Start small
If you try and go to hard too soon something will give I shit you not. If its not your elbow, knee, back or what ever it will be your dedication.
I know it may seem shit to start small and slow but it gives you so much more room to play with in the long run.
3. A routine is good
OK, now I know that my motto is balls to the wall every time but im fucking human just like you so every now and again I wont really be feeling my workout or diet. What do I do when this happens? DO I give up?, Skip the workout, give up on the diet?
Are you fucking crazy? No I don't do any of those pussy things, instead I simply fall into a routine. I just go through the motions day in and day out until my motivation comes back.
4. You can always out-eat your training.
If you don't believe me then go and do a 6 Hour marathon followed by 6 large pizzas, makes sense right? If I work out with intensity for an hour I should be able to eat something like a pizza or a big mac!
If you answered yes then get the fuck off my blog you compensating bollox! Life is hard and shit most of the time and your diet isn't any different.
5. Most people don't give a fuck
Honestly, when I started bodybuilding I thought everyone and their mother would care about my looks and how much I lifted. The sad truth is that no one gives two shits, they have their own lives, own problems and they don't give a flying fuck about you and your life.
If your gonna follow this path, do it for you and you alone.
6. Comparing yourself to others
Just don't do it. Right so your what? about 200 pounds, leanish and about 6 foot right? So you eat pretty good and have a decent lift so you get all smug when you see a newbie trying to lift or stick to their diet. Well sunshine I have news for you, in this big bad world I would on average their is probably about 8-900 million people bigger, stronger, leaner and better than you so please have some fucking humility.
On the other hand, if your constantly shooting yourself down because your not as big, fast or as strong as the other guys in your gym just STOP! Compare you to you and no one else.
7. Being too anal
Now this wont apply to many people but it defiantly applys to me. If your like me your the kinda guy that likes to be real natty gritty with details that don't matter a shit. Things like freaking out over eating 70 grams of carbs instead of 65 grams or refusing to eat vegetables because they have a tablespoon of olive oil on them.
My advice to guys like me is to just try and chill, I know from experience that we think in all or nothings which is handy because it goes hand in hand with bodybuilding but this is one of those times you need to try and chill just even a little.
8. Not being consistent
So you did pretty well this week huh? Hit the gym a full 3 times and managed to stick to your diet from Monday to Friday! Good man yourself but just one question motherfucker what the hell happened once Saturday hit huh? Did you suddenly get permission to give up on your routine?
Look I know better than anyone that moderation is key in this sport but when it comes to consistency you have NO CHOICE but to be consistently consistent, other wise your entire plan goes to shit princess.
9. Not being patient
Lads let me lay some advice onto you, now before I do I will admit that I need to remind myself of this constantly but it goes like this "Bodybuilding is a process, not an end result".
That's all im going to say about that, If you cant learn to be patient you will never have the body you want.
10. Have fun
I don't know how many times in the last 6 months Ive dragged my ass to the gym hating every second of it.
That simply isn't the attitude you want to have about working out, you need to learn to love it.
Nowadays I look forward to my leg workouts because Im actually scared about the amount of weight im going to try and squat. I get all giggly and start to hyper ventilate and the thought of raw squatting 240 pounds.
My advice is that, no matter how you do it find a way to enjoy your workouts, for me I enjoy the pain(not in a masochistic way) but I do enjoy feeling sore after a great workout, knowing im the fucking man for breaking my balls doing something most people gag at just thinking about and im even more the fucking man because I loved every minute of that shit.
